Back to School Belongs to Us Too

There is something about Back to School season that still gets me.

Fresh notebooks. New pens. A brand-new box of colored pencils with all the points still intact... can't you still kind of smell it all?! Remember paste? 

Were you one of the lucky ones that got a Trapper Keeper? 🤩

I haven't needed actual school supplies in a very long time, but put me in the school supply aisle at Target in late August and apparently some part of my brain still thinks I need a three ring binder and pocket folders.

I know it's not really about the supplies, Back to School always felt like a fresh start.

New teachers. New classes. New clothes. A new schedule. You got to walk into a new year without really knowing what you might be good at, who you'd meet or what you'd know by the time it was over.

When we're kids, we're expected to keep learning. Every year, somebody hands us a new stack of books and essentially says, Okay. Let's see what you can learn next. Then we grow up.

And then learning mostly becomes something we're supposed to have a practical reason for doing. We take a class because our job requires it. We learn a new program because somebody changed the software again. We watch a YouTube video because the printer just WON'T WORK! We don't get a whole lot of opportunities to say:

I want to learn this because I want to see where it could take me.

We should do more of THAT. Especially when the thing you want to learn is something you already love.

Not to start over, to start SOMETHING. That's a big difference.

If you, like me nearly 20 year ago, ever wondered what it would be like to turn all those years of Disney vacations, resort research, restaurant opinions, park strategies and "just ask me, I'll know" into something more, Back to School season feels like a pretty good time to find out.

The majority of my students didn't enroll because they hated what they were doing, had an epiphany and declared: "I'm going to learn to be a Disney Travel Agent!". No...they saw women just like them living a life they envied and had this little voice asking, Why not me?

• What if I could be good at this?
• What if all this Disney knowledge in my head is actually useful?
• What if I could build something of my own?
• What if this could become a career?

Those are really good questions. And unlike the school we remember, you don't have to rearrange your life to find out the answers.

You can learn at your kitchen table. On the couch. After work. On a Sunday morning with coffee and nobody telling you that you can't wear pajamas to class.

You can take your time.

But you know, I think there's something else tucked inside the decision to enroll. You're choosing to learn something because you want to.

Something that interests you. Something you're excited about. Something that could actually change what you do next.

I don't think we ever get too old for that. So if you ask me, Back to School doesn't have to belong to the kids. It's never too late to be what you might have been.

Go buy the good pens! You might need them. 😉
