I Started This as a Side Hustle...Here's What Happened

You know what’s funny? This was never supposed to be a “business.” It was just…something I was good at. Something I loved. Something my friends and family kept asking me to help with over and over again...planning Disney trips. And yeah, I was more than a little obsessed.

At the time though, I wasn’t sitting there thinking, “Let me build a brand, create a course, teach others and start a membership.” Not even close. I was running a marketing agency with my husband, had a young daughter, was a PTA mom, had a house to take care of, a fur baby and daydreaming daily of working for Disney. I had no idea in what capacity, but I loved the planning, strategy and challenge of there being a million ways to tour the parks, but meticulously mapping out the right one. I wanted to fill my days with that energy, but...I had to also pay the bills. So, I took a baby step toward my goal. 

I designed the Get Down to Disness Daily Agenda Book for Walt Disney World. This day planner was well received, I sold it on my own website and Amazon, but it wasn't totally fulfilling. I wanted more action than that one and done design delivered. That's when I took the big step of becoming a Travel Agent specializing in Disney Destinations. (Before I knew better, I called it "Disney Travel Agent". If you join the ranks, you'll learn why that's a no-no title. 🫣)

I learned this real quick: Planning vacations for other people when money is on the line, is VERY different than planning for yourself or casually for family and friends. I had to learn the hard way more than a few times (like calling myself a Disney Travel Agent-whoops!), but with an extensive professional background in advertising, marketing and graphic design, building the business proved to be quite easy for me. I started mentoring colleagues in business development and then saw very clearly what I was meant for...teaching others how to build this dream for themselves. I am the most fulfilled (and successful) in my career than I've ever been. These last 12 years have been a dream come true. I want that for everyone!

To be clear though, this path isn't for everyone. It takes more than a love (or obsession) for Disney. It takes consistency. It takes putting yourself out there even when it feels weird. It takes patience and a thick skin. BUT...

If you're the person who:

  • Plans everyone's trips
  • Gets way too excited about building itineraries
  • Loves the details many overlook
  • Can't get enough WDW news and reels

...then this might not just be a hobby for you either. If any part of this is hitting a nerve for you, don't brush it off. That feeling in your gut is there for a reason. Good things happen to those who go for it! (I'm looking at a print on my wall that says that as a I type.)
