Some Context to the Story
Let me take you back to my early 20s, when I worked in the NYC fashion industry and thought I had just ruined my career.
I had delegated a task, assumed it would get done, and didn’t follow up. The ball was dropped, the responsibility landed squarely on my shoulders, and my name was the one attached. Cue the spiral of panic and drama (early 20s energy, you know?).
But instead of losing it on me, my boss simply said, “What you learn from this is… control your destiny.” That phrase hit me like a ton of bricks and it stuck.
What “Control Your Destiny” Really Means
My boss wasn’t telling me to micromanage. He was reminding me that ownership matters.
If your name is on something, whether it’s a fashion launch or a family’s once-in-a-lifetime Disney vacation, you’re responsible for the outcome. Not just the intention. Not just the effort. The result.
In the world of Disney planning, that means checking and double-checking. Not assuming that policies haven’t changed (because they probably have). Not trusting that one answer from one Cast Member is the full story. It means owning the guest experience as best you can, especially when so much can shift in a moment.
There’s a Lot You Can’t Control, But So Much You Can
We know there will always be surprise closures, wonky tech issues, or last-minute shifts to showtimes or menus. That’s the Disney we love (and sometimes don’t).
But you can control being informed. Being thorough. Being the person your clients trust to tell them what they need to know, even when it’s not the magical answer they hoped for.
Nothing erodes trust faster than a guest coming back with:
• “Why didn’t you tell us…?”
• “We didn’t know we had to…”
• “You never mentioned…”
And as you know, trust is the foundation of repeat business. And repeat business? That’s the secret sauce to being in this for the long haul.
This Business Is Built on Trust
Whether you’re brand new or ten years deep, “I didn’t know” isn’t a great look. Google and AI are OFTEN WRONG. Blog posts go out of date. Even the Cast Member at DTA might give you conflicting info. So when in doubt? Double check it out. Control your destiny.
